Course Overview
The Level 3 Award in Outdoor First Aid (OFA) is a comprehensive qualification designed to provide learners with the essential skills and knowledge required to manage medical emergencies in outdoor and remote environments.
This course is ideal for individuals who work, lead, or participate in outdoor activities in rural, mountainous, or wilderness settings—where immediate access to medical facilities may be limited.
Participants will develop practical expertise in assessing and managing a wide range of injuries and medical emergencies, including fractures, dislocations, asthma, diabetes, and environmental conditions such as hypothermia and heatstroke. The training combines theoretical learning with realistic, hands-on practical sessions to build confidence and competence in responding effectively to outdoor emergencies.
Upon successful completion, learners will receive a nationally recognized qualification valid for three years, demonstrating their ability to provide competent first aid in outdoor and remote situations.
To enroll in the Level 3 Award in Outdoor First Aid (OFA), learners must meet the following criteria:
- Age Requirement: Minimum age of 18 years at the time of assessment.
- Physical Capability: Learners should be physically capable of performing first aid techniques such as CPR compression and assisting with casualty movement when required.
- English Language Proficiency: Participants should have sufficient English language skills to engage in discussions, understand course materials, and complete written assessments.
- Experience: No prior first aid experience is required. However, an interest in outdoor activities and a willingness to learn are essential.
The qualification comprises four mandatory units, covering both theoretical and practical elements:
- Understanding the Role and Responsibilities of a First Aider in Outdoor Environments
- Managing an Unresponsive Casualty in Outdoor Settings
- Managing Injuries and Medical Emergencies in Outdoor Environments
- Outdoor Incident Management and Evacuation Procedures
The Level 3 Award in Outdoor First Aid (OFA) is a three-day training program.
All participants must complete mandatory assessments conducted through approved training centers.
This course is available in multiple learning formats to suit individual preferences and schedules:
- In-Person Training
- Online Learning
- Blended Learning (a combination of both)
Learners are required to complete four mandatory assessments, designed to evaluate both theoretical understanding and practical competence.
A minimum passing score of 75% is required to successfully achieve the qualification.
